Tree Root Problems With My Pool, What Do I Need To Do?
This truly is a very extreme picture of damage tree roots can do to your pool, your deck, and your plumbing!
Most of the time, the damage is much more subtle.  You might have a higher water bill (roots cause leaks).  You might notice that your salt cell can’t keep up with the chemistry (leaks caused by roots have the effect of taking the chemicals with the water running out)

 

We have had tree roots undermine and break up concrete pool decks, we’ve also seen roots come right through the pool walls, skimmers, tile, coping, and actually grow down the plumbing lines. I swear that some tree roots can "smell" the water in the pool, and make a beeline for it, stretching it's branches out until it pokes a hole, and busts up the floor or walls of your pool.  Usually you will notice something is “strange” long before it becomes this severe.  The first warning you may have is that your pool starts leaking, and you may only find the root problem by doing a leak detection test.

So Do I Have To Get Rid Of My Trees?.........
USUALLY NOT, but there are things you need to do immediately.
In this valley, we generally recommend digging and pouring a “root barrier” wall.  This means digging a sub-surface barrier wall designed to re-direct tree roots.  This is quite a bit of work, but it is much preferred way to deal with this problem.  What you have to do is excavate and remove the roots that are the problem (dig and cut them out of the ground).    Then an area that is approximately 5 feet deep and 5 to 8 feet long, sub-surface needs to be excavated.  Then you have to set forms and pour concrete to create the root barrier.  If done correctly, it does not damage the trees, just contain the root system and redirects them away from the pool and spa.
This is a pretty successful fix that allows you to enjoy the pleasure of your trees, and still enjoy and protect your pool from the root damage.
